Denis Shapovalov of Canada was eliminated in the third round by Layla Fernandez in the men’s singles tennis tournament in Miami on Saturday.

Shapovalov, out., of Richmond Hill, fought off Argentina’s Thiago Tirant 7-7 (1), -6-6 (3) in a match that lasted just two hours and 20 minutes.

This was Shapovalov’s first match in a Masters 1000 event after the first round.

Fernandez beats American Shlyn Krueger at -5-5, -5-5.

Shapovalov’s next opponent, American third seed Taylor Fritz, has fallen directly to fellow American Lorenzo Song of Italy.

Shapovalov won 75 percent of his first serve points, but the Canadian also committed a double error on the court at Hard Rock Stadium.

The Canadian had a chance to close it out in the second set when he led 5-5, 5-5, 5-2, 5-2, but Tirant saved three games, forced a decider and then rallied from a breakdown to extend the match.

In the match against Fernandez, the 20-year-old Kruger played his part, winning 32 return points to the Canadian’s 19.

Fernandez, 22, lost to Sofia Kenin in the United States on Saturday, along with doubles partner Nicole Melika-Martinez of the United States and Lipedila Kichnok of Ukraine.

On Saturday, China’s Geyu Wang and Sisi Zhong upset second-seeded Gabriela Dabrowski and Erin Rutledge of Ottawa 4-4, 6-6 (3) in New Zealand.

Wang and Zheng had four pars and three double faults, more than any of the Tories, and eight double faults for Dabrowski and Rootlife.

Montreal’s Felix Auger- lly Liasim was still in the men’s singles. He met Italy’s 15th seed Lorenzo on Sunday.
